Computer Security

Malware

Malware can be classified into a few different categories.

Viruses

Viruses are malicious programs that take control of your computer, either to send email spam or to be a part of a botnet. New viruses are constantly being created, and so it is important that your antivirus program is up-to-date.

Spyware

Spyware is different than viruses. Spyware is used to steal information such as your credit card number silently through keyloggers and other such things.

Protecting Yourself

It is important to protect yourself from these threats. You will need the following protection components if you want to be fully protected:

  1. Shield Deluxe
  2. CA
  3. BitDefender
  4. Norton
  5. Kaspersky
  6. NOD32
  7. Panda
  8. McAfee
  9. Trend Mrcro

Anti-Spyware, such as Spybot: Search and Destroy or Spyware doctor help keep spyware off your computer.

Firewall

Most anti-virus programs include a firewall.

Common Misconceptions

I don't need any protection because I don't visit malicious sites.

Viruses and spyware do not only come from malicious sites. They can be included in attachments sent to you by your coworkers, or your 'trustworthy' sites may be compromised by hackers and made to feed you malicious software.
